Confucius Institute at Kathmandu University, Nepal opens elementary Chinese class in Newar Community

On March 15th, Confucius Institute at Kathmandu University held an opening ceremony of the elementary Chinese class in association with Jyapu Samaj Yala at Jyapu Samaj Auditorium where more than 60 people attended the opening ceremony including Tirtha Lal Maharjan, Chairman of the Jyapu Samaj and Naresh Maharjan, in charge of the education division of the community.

In his speech, Chairman Maharjan first congratulated in the opening of Chinese class. He recalled the cooperation between Confucius Institute and Jayapu Samaj and praised Confucius Institute for its outstanding contributions to enhancing the friendship between China and Nepal. He also emphasizes that Chinese language learners are increasing in Nepal these recent years which not only enriched the life of the community but also gave opportunity to have diverse knowledge of international culture. He hoped that the students would cherish this opportunity to learn Chinese and strive for success.

Niroj Maharjan, whose Chinese name is Zhu Shan, a local teacher of the Confucius Institute welcomed all the guests and students who participated in opening ceremony on behalf of the Confucius Institute and introduced the learning content of the training class to the students. He encouraged the students to study Chinese earnestly to improve their Chinese proficiency so that they can grab an opportunity in the future to have further study in China.

Naresh Maharjan then emphasized the regulations of the Chinese class including student attendance and performance evaluation methods. He hoped that the students would cherish the opportunity and study hard. Afterwards, Mr. Niroj Maharjan started the first Chinese class with greetings and self-introduction. His lectures were lively and humorous which made the students actively participated in the interaction in the classroom, listened with relish and applauded from time to time.

The Jayap Samaj is a community organization belonging to Nepal's one of the indigenous people, the Newar. This ethnic group is one of the oldest ethnic groups in Nepal with a long history and cultural tradition. Confucius Institute at Kathmandu University will strengthen cooperation with the Jyapu community to continuously enrich the content of activities and intensify people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and Nepal.
