"International Chinese Day" Celebration Held by Confucius Institute at Kathmandu University

On April 20, 2022, Confucius Institute at Kathmandu University held the "International Chinese Day" celebration at the campus square of Kathmandu University under the theme of "Chinese: Building a Bright Future Together", with the support and guidance of Chinese Embassy in Nepal, Hebei University of Economics and Business and Kathmandu University, together with Confucius Institute at Tribhuvan University, Nepal-China Cultural and Educational Council and the Chinese Education Society-Nepal.

H. E. Ms. Hou Yanqi, Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Mr. Devendra Paudel, Minister for Education, Science and Technology Nepal,  Mr. Leela Mani Paudyal, former Nepalese Ambassador to China, Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa, Vice-Chancellor of Kathmandu University, Prof. Dr. Subodh Sharma, Registrar and Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute, Prof. Dharma Kanta Baskota, Vice-Chancellor of Tribhuvan University, Dr. Harish Chandra Shah, President of Nepal-China Cultural and Educational Council, Prof. Dr. Liu Bing, President of Hebei University of Economics and Business, Prof.Sun Zhanxue, President of East China University of Technology, and Prof. Ma Weisheng, President of Qinghai Minzu University attended the celebration and delivered speeches. More than 2,000 people including teachers and students of Kathmandu University, Tribhuvan University, Chinese partner universities, teaching sites of the Confucius Institute, media reporters, and Chinese language lovers participated in the series of activities.

H. E. Ms. Hou Yanqi said that Chinese is one of the oldest languages that maintain continuity in the world, and it is also the language that is most spoken in the world, inheriting the cultural genes of the Chinese nation. Today, April 20, is the 13th International Chinese Language Day. It is also the day when Cang Jie, the legendary "ancestor of Chinese characters", created Chinese characters, which is of great commemorative significance. She said that the Chinese Embassy in Nepal will, as always, support the teaching and promotion of Chinese in Nepal, and support the Confucius Institutes to better satisfy the enthusiasm of all walks of life in Nepal for learning Chinese. She hopes that more Nepalese friends will learn Chinese, experience the charm of Chinese, feel the greatness of Chinese culture, and jointly build a better future for the friendship between China and Nepal and the youth of the two countries!

Minister Devendra Paudel congratulated the Confucius Institute on hosting the International Chinese Day, he said that language is the carrier of culture and a bridge of communication, and Chinese language has played an important role in maintaining good-neighborly and friendly relations between China and Nepal and enhancing the friendship between the two peoples. Whether at the lakeside of Pokhara or in the tourist resort of Thamel, people strongly feel the demand for Chinese. Chinese has become a necessary language for Nepalese, and more and more Nepalese students are learning and using Chinese. He suggested that more universities in Nepal should offer Chinese-related majors, and more students should study Chinese at the Confucius Institute, so as to contribute to national construction and Nepal-China friendship.

Prof. Dr. Liu Bing said that Hebei University of Economics and Business and Kathmandu University adhere to the cooperation concept of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, and support the Confucius Institute to carry out Chinese education. The Confucius Institute has achieved excellent results in Chinese teaching, cultural exchange activities, Chinese + vocational education projects, and Chinese and Nepalese national studies. It was awarded the Confucius Institute of the year at the 2018 Global Confucius Institute Conference. Both sides will continue to deepen cooperation and promote the characteristic development of the Confucius Institute.

Mr. Leela Mani Paudyal, Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa, Prof. Dr. Subodh Sharma, Prof. Dharma Kanta Baskota, Dr. Harish Chandra Shah, Prof. Sun Zhanxue, Prof. Ma Weisheng and other guests congratulated the successful celebration of the International Chinese Day in their speeches, and expressed the vision of strengthening cooperation between China and Nepal and building a bright future together.

The series of activities of this Chinese Day also include the recording of "International Chinese Day" wishes by well-known Nepalese personalities, the "Sing Chinese Songs and Spread the Friendship between China and Nepal" Chinese song singing competition, the "Reading Chinese Classics and Taste Spiritual Wisdom" Chinese Classics Reading Competition, training conference for local Chinese teachers in Nepal, the release ceremony of the Nepali version of "Poems of Mao Zedong" translated by Nepalese cultural scholar and translator Dr. Satya Mohan Joshi, "Cloud Experience" China's colorful culture on the Chinese-plus platform and other offline activities and online activities.
