Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao attended the cornerstone-laying ceremony of the Confucius Institute Building at the University of Zambia

On the afternoon of June 20, 2014, accompanied by Zambia’s Minister of the Interior Ngosei Himyakula, Vice Minister of Education David Mubomba, Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Li Jinzao and Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Zhou Yuxiao, Vice President of China Li Yuanchao, who was visiting Zambia, came to the University of Zambia, attended the cornerstone-laying ceremony of the Confucius Institute Building at the University of Zambia aided by the Chinese government and unveiled it. The ceremony was covered by CCTV, China Radio International, Xinhua News Agency, Zambia local media and other major medias.

Since its establishment in July 2010, the Confucius Institute at the University of Zambia has been dedicated to teaching Chinese language and spreading Chinese culture. Under the guidance of the Confucius Institute Headquarter, it is highly valued and strongly supported by the leaders of Hebei University of Economics and Business and the University of Zambia. In the past three years, it developed quickly, from 20 students to over 4,700 students and 18 Chinese teaching sites. Chinese has been included in the educational curriculum as a degree course in the University of Zambia and Mulungusi University, which are two of the three public universities in Zambia; as a credit course in the curriculum of the public middle school over ten province. The Confucius Institute makes full use of various teaching methods such as radio, television, and the Internet to promote Chinese language to universities, middle schools and primary schools across the country, serving all sectors of Zambian society, which has generated a broad and far-reaching impact.
